Exercise 2-2 Paragraph developed by example

Each of the following numbered items contains a first and last sentence for a paragraph. For each item, supply two or more examples that would develop the paragraph. Then choose one item and write a complete paragraph on that topic. You may reword the first and last sentences as necessary to make them more compatible with your material. Assume that your audience is your classmates or colleagues.

Introduction to European Culture, American Society and Culture
This term several useful and interesting courses have been offered. An Introduction to European Culture, for instance, gives us a lot of background knowledge of the history of European philosophy, literature, and arts. From time to time we see slide shows of famous paintings and hear tapes of famous pieces of music, and they make the lectures all the more interesting. American Society and Culture is another course that attracts a large audience. The teacher, who visited the United States recently, discusses new trends and changes in American life as well as American history and traditions. We like these and other courses very much, because they help us not only to improve our English but also to broaden our vision.
* 1. Happiness means different things to different people. … Although the definition of happiness depends on each individual, my happiness consists in my family.
2. Although a college degree will not guarantee getting a good job after graduation, it does have some advantages. ... To someone who wants these advantages, a college degree does seem to be worth the effort.
3. Relaxing can mean different things to different people. ... Whatever your choice may be, some form of relaxation is necessary for mental health.
4. New words are added to our slang vocabulary every year or two. ... These words may drop into oblivion next year, or they may be absorbed into the language and cease to be regarded as slang.

Choose one of the following five topic sentences and write a paragraph supporting it. Include the essential parts of a paragraph: (1) a topic sentence with a controlling idea, (2) main supporting ideas, (3) details, (4) logical indicators (if appropriate), and (5) a concluding sentence.
Each topic sentence suggests enough potential ideas so that each paragraph could be expanded into a longer composition. Save your paragraphs for future composition work.
* 1. Even though a medical student studies very hard in school, he still needs to have a few more skills to perform a successful operation and become a successful surgeon. (How to Be a Good Surgeon.)

Choose a suitable topic of your own, and write a paragraph using one of the following methods: reason, definition, comparison/contrast, cause/effect, classification and process. Be sure to include what you have learnt in this chapter: topic sentence, developments, concluding sentence and logical indicators. Of course you have to have your audience and purpose in your mind. Some topics are provided in the following for your choice.
